Tinubu Set to Address National Assembly as Nigeria Marks 27th Democracy Day

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.
The disclosure was made by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) tasked with coordinating the nationwide celebration.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the presidential address as one of the key highlights of this year’s Democracy Day programme approved by the Federal Government.
Akume noted that Democracy Day remains a significant occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of patriots who fought for the entrenchment and sustenance of democratic governance in the country. He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
According to him, the annual observance also offers an opportunity for the Federal Government to showcase achievements recorded in strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
The SGF urged members of the committee to commence work immediately, emphasizing that the celebration would be organised in line with the Tinubu administration’s policy of fiscal discipline and prudent management of public resources.
Activities lined up for the commemoration will begin with a World Press Conference on June 4, followed by Special Juma’at Prayers on June 5 and an Interdenominational Church Service on June 7.
Other events include a Democracy Day Public Lecture on June 9 and youth- and women-focused programmes on June 10.
On June 12, President Tinubu is expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast in addition to his address before the National Assembly, while a Democracy Day Gala Night will bring the celebrations to a close.
Democracy Day is celebrated annually on June 12 in honour of the historic 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in Nigeria’s history and a defining moment in the nation’s democratic journey.
