The Delta State Police Command has invited prominent safety and human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, for questioning over his involvement in the circulation of a viral video showing the fatal shooting of Oghenemine Ogidi by a police officer in Effurun.
According to an invitation letter dated June 1, 2026, and issued by the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Asaba, Gwamnishu is being investigated over allegations bordering on conspiracy, attempted murder, incitement, obstruction, and other related offences.
The letter, signed by ACP Adigwe on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, CID, directed the activist to appear before the homicide section of the State CID in Asaba on June 4, 2026, as part of ongoing investigations.
The development comes amid heightened public concern over the death of Ogidi, who was allegedly shot by ASP Usman Nuhu in Effurun. The incident triggered widespread outrage after video footage of the shooting surfaced online and quickly gained traction on social media.
Gwamnishu, Director-General of the Behind Bars Human Rights and Safe City Volunteer Foundation, has been at the forefront of advocacy campaigns against crime, kidnapping and alleged human rights abuses in Delta State.
Reacting to the police invitation in a video shared on his social media platforms, the activist disclosed that he had already reported at the Delta State Police Command Headquarters in Asaba ahead of the scheduled date, stressing that he had nothing to hide and was prepared to cooperate fully with investigators.
He maintained that his role in the matter was limited to sharing information about the incident to raise public awareness and draw attention to concerns surrounding alleged police brutality.
Describing the allegations against him as baseless, Gwamnishu insisted he had no links to terrorism, attempted murder or any criminal conspiracy. He also denied claims that he influenced the transfer of police officers serving in the Delta State Command.
The activist further stated that his contributions to security efforts in the state have largely been through advocacy, information sharing and collaboration with law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that he neither carries weapons nor engages in any unlawful activity.
The police have yet to make further public comments on the investigation as attention continues to focus on the circumstances surrounding Ogidi’s death and the ensuing public reaction.
