Preparations have reached an advanced stage for the 2026 Sheriff Junior Oborevwori Unification Cup, with participating teams set to discover their group opponents at the official draw ceremony scheduled for Saturday, October 17, in Osubi, Delta State.
The ceremony will take place at the Osubi Civic Centre, Osubi Town, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Powered by the Sheriff Jnr. Care Foundation, the competition is designed to harness the unifying power of football to promote peace, strengthen community relations and provide emerging grassroots talents with opportunities to showcase their abilities.
The 2026 edition represents a significant expansion of the Sheriff Junior Oborevwori Invitational Soccer Tournament, extending participation beyond previous boundaries to accommodate teams from Delta State’s three senatorial districts.
The wider coverage is expected to deepen grassroots participation, foster healthy rivalry among young footballers and strengthen relationships among communities and local government areas through the game.
With the theme “The Election Year Edition,” the tournament builds on the success of its previous outing, which saw Team Uvwie emerge champions after defeating Team Okpe in a keenly contested final settled by penalties.
Saturday’s draw will determine the groups and fixtures, offering participating teams an early glimpse of the challenges ahead as they prepare to battle for the coveted trophy.
The Local Organising Committee, led by Comrade Oghenede Roy Uruemu, has called on football stakeholders, supporters, enthusiasts and members of the public to attend the ceremony and identify with an initiative aimed at using sports to promote unity and youth development across Delta State.
As excitement builds ahead of the expanded competition, the organisers are optimistic that the tournament will further strengthen its reputation as a platform for grassroots football development and community integration.
