……..Agbarho All-Stars, Men 2 Boyz, Uvwie All-Stars, Delta Strikers also impress in Week Two
United Friends, Orhuworun All-Stars and Planner All-Stars have emerged among the early contenders for knockout-round places in the fourth edition of the Ofugara Peace and Unity Football Tournament following a thrilling weekend of group-stage encounters across the NNPC and Okotogbo football pitches.
United Friends recorded the most emphatic victory of the weekend, thrashing Oghara All-Stars 5-2, while Orhuworun All-Stars defeated Crusaders 3-0 and Planner All-Stars overcame Club 40 Professionals 3-1 to strengthen their early claims.
The Week Two fixtures, played on Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11, also witnessed impressive victories for Men 2 Boyz, Uvwie All-Stars, Delta Strikers All-Stars and Agbarho All-Stars as the 32-team competition gathered momentum.
Agbarho All-Stars joined the list of winning teams with a convincing 3-1 victory over Ex-Enerhen All-Stars, demonstrating their ability to secure maximum points in the fiercely contested group-stage campaign.
United Friends, however, stole the spotlight with their four-goal winning margin against Oghara All-Stars. Their five-goal haul underlined their attacking potential, although conceding twice suggests that defensive improvements will be necessary if they are to maintain their momentum against stronger opposition.
Orhuworun All-Stars also made a strong statement with their 3-0 triumph over Crusaders, combining attacking efficiency with a clean sheet, while Planner All-Stars showed similar promise in their 3-1 victory over Club 40 Professionals.
Men 2 Boyz recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over Ex Leopard, while Uvwie All-Stars defeated Veteran All-Stars 2-0. Delta Strikers All-Stars equally impressed with a 2-0 victory over Udu Football Coaches.
These results place the winning sides among the teams to watch as the battle for knockout qualification intensifies, although consistency in subsequent fixtures will be crucial to their ambitions.
At the Okotogbo Football Pitch, Ex Polavis edged Sapele All-Stars 2-1, while Express All-Stars, Ijaw Professionals and Ubeji All-Stars each secured narrow 1-0 victories over Brisibe All-Stars, Ighogbadu and Uvwie Ex-Players respectively.
Corner-Lux also defeated Ekpan All-Stars 1-0, while Ex Ovwian United recorded an identical scoreline against Okpe All-Stars of Ugbokodo.
The narrow victories demonstrated the importance of taking scoring opportunities and protecting leads, qualities that could prove decisive as teams seek to accumulate the points required to advance.
Meanwhile, All-Stars International and Patani All-Stars played out an entertaining 2-2 draw, while Daudu United and Ex Mowie settled for a 1-1 stalemate. Udu Ex Professionals and Marakana Lions also shared the spoils after their encounter ended 1-1.
Although the draws kept the respective teams in contention, their ability to turn future opportunities into victories could determine their ultimate fate in the group stage.
The weekend results also left some teams with plenty of work to do. Oghara All-Stars, Club 40 Professionals and Crusaders will need to address defensive shortcomings after conceding multiple goals, while other defeated sides must improve their finishing and overall organisation to revive their qualification hopes.
However, with the group-stage campaign still in progress, no definitive conclusion can be drawn about the knockout-round prospects of any team without reference to the current group standings and remaining fixtures.
The fourth edition of the Ofugara Peace and Unity Football Tournament brings together veteran football clubs from across Delta State, using the beautiful game to promote peace, friendship and community cohesion.
With the ₦10 million grand prize providing an added incentive, the coming fixtures are expected to produce more intense contests as participating teams pursue qualification and seek to establish themselves as genuine contenders for the title.
