The 2026 edition of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) All Stars Tournament got underway on Sunday with Chairman of the association, General Chikelue Iloenyosi, declaring that football should remain a lifelong pursuit rather than end with retirement from competitive action.
Speaking at the colourful opening ceremony, Iloenyosi said the annual championship was conceived to provide retired footballers with a platform to remain physically fit, mentally active and socially engaged, while also using the game to strengthen community bonds across Anambra State.
Describing the tournament as one of the FA’s flagship programmes, the former Super Eagles defender said the competition has continued to attract ex-internationals, retired professional footballers and veteran players from different communities, making it a unique initiative that combines recreation, healthy living and football development.
“Football should not end with retirement. The game gave us so much during our active years, and this tournament ensures that our former players continue to enjoy its benefits while maintaining their health, fitness and friendship.”
He noted that beyond the quest for honours, the competition has become an important vehicle for promoting wellness, unity and social integration among former footballers and their communities.
“This is more than a championship. It is a celebration of football, healthy living and togetherness. We want our retired players to remain role models and continue inspiring younger generations by demonstrating discipline, fitness and commitment to the game.”
The FA chairman also applauded the corporate organisations and partners whose support has sustained the competition, saying their investment has enabled the tournament to grow into one of Nigeria’s foremost veterans’ football championships.
He assured participating teams of a professionally organised competition, stressing that outstanding performances would be rewarded, with prizes awaiting the champions and other top-performing teams at the end of the tournament.
“There are rewards for excellence because we want every team to compete with passion, discipline and respect for the game. We are committed to raising the standard of this competition every year, and our vision is to make it the benchmark for veterans’ football in Nigeria.”
The ANSFA All Stars Tournament has earned widespread acclaim for creating an avenue for ex-internationals, retired professionals and veteran footballers to remain active after their playing careers while fostering friendship, mentorship and community development through sport.
Matches in the 2026 edition will continue at designated centres across Anambra State, with participating teams expected to battle for honours in what promises to be another highly competitive and entertaining championship.
