The Delta State Government has condemned the violence that erupted in Effurun on Sunday, directing security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible.
The directive followed the circulation of videos of the incident on social media, which the government described as disturbing and inconsistent with its commitment to maintaining peace and public order.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said the government was particularly concerned about the reported assault on Simon Mudi, describing the attack as unacceptable.
He said the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori would not tolerate acts of violence or lawlessness under any circumstances, regardless of the identity or status of those involved.
“The reported acts of violence, particularly the attack on Simon Mudi, are unacceptable. Such conduct has no place in Delta State, and those responsible must be brought to justice,” the commissioner said.
Aniagwu disclosed that security agencies had been directed to commence investigations with a view to identifying and apprehending all those connected with the incident.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that the Oborevwori administration would continue to uphold law and order across the state.
The commissioner also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid ongoing investigations, while advising against actions capable of escalating tensions.
