Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, on Friday inaugurated a suite of academic facilities at the University of Delta (UNIDEL), Owa-Alero Campus, Ika North-East Local Government Area, underscoring his administration’s resolve to expand access to quality education across the state.
The projects commissioned include the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences Complex named in honour of the Governor the Faculty of Environmental Sciences building, the Faculty of Engineering Lecture Hall and Workshops, a 500-seater central auditorium and a fully equipped central library.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Oborevwori described the occasion as a “harvest of projects,” noting that while his administration is often associated with high-impact infrastructure such as flyovers, bridges and roads, equal priority has been given to education and healthcare.
He stressed that investment in educational infrastructure remains central to human capital development, explaining that the new facilities were designed to global standards to promote innovation, research, entrepreneurship and hands-on skills acquisition.
The Governor urged students to utilise the facilities responsibly, warning against vandalism and emphasising discipline, creativity and integrity as pillars of academic excellence.
Recalling his role in the establishment of UNIDEL and two other state universities during his tenure as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Oborevwori said the move was necessitated by limited admission quotas that left thousands of qualified candidates without placement annually. According to him, the decision has proven worthwhile, given the growing student population and stabilising impact on youth engagement.
He commended the immediate past administration for initiating the university project and praised the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other stakeholders for facilitating the approvals, describing the simultaneous establishment of three universities as a rare achievement. The Governor also expressed appreciation to the university management for naming the Management and Social Sciences Complex after him.
Former Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, lauded Oborevwori’s leadership and continuity, noting that UNIDEL alone now accommodates about 15,000 students an outcome he said has contributed to social stability by creating opportunities for young people.
Commissioner for Higher Education, Nyerhovwo Tonukari, disclosed that the Sheriff Oborevwori Complex was completed in 2025, while the Environmental Sciences Faculty awarded in 2021 was completed under the current administration.
He added that the Engineering Complex features fully equipped workshops for metalwork, carpentry, mechanics, foundry and welding, alongside a 200-capacity studio. The central library seats 426 students, while the main auditorium accommodates 500.
Vice-Chancellor of UNIDEL, Stella Chiemeke, described the projects as a reflection of the Governor’s transformational and people-centred agenda, saying they would significantly enhance the university’s capacity to train professionals critical to the state’s socio-economic development.
Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Hon. Monday Odigwe, also commended the Governor, noting that the projects exemplify balanced development and the practical implementation of the MORE Agenda across Delta State.
