Port Harcourt is set to come alive with top-class women’s football after the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) officially confirmed the Rivers State capital as host of the 2026 NWFL Premiership Super Six Finals.
The season-ending title playoffs, scheduled for June 5 to June 14, 2026, will mark the first time the prestigious championship tournament will be staged in the Garden City, with six of Nigeria’s finest women’s clubs battling for domestic glory and continental qualification.
Announcing the host city, NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Modupe Shabi, said the decision was influenced by Rivers State’s consistent support for women’s football and successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
“On behalf of the management of the NWFL, we are delighted to announce Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as host of the 2026 NWFL Premiership Super Six Finals,” Shabi stated.
“The Rivers State Government has consistently demonstrated strong support for women’s football and we are excited to return with our flagship competition as part of our commitment to expanding elite women’s football across Nigeria.”
The championship will feature defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and first-time qualifiers Abia Angels in a fierce round-robin contest expected to deliver thrilling encounters over five matchdays.
With the NWFL producing different champions in recent seasons — Rivers Angels (2021), Bayelsa Queens (2022 and 2025), Delta Queens (2023), and Edo Queens (2024) — expectations are already high for another explosive battle for the crown.
Shabi described the Super Six as the pinnacle of the women’s league season and expressed confidence that football fans in Rivers State would provide a memorable atmosphere throughout the tournament.
“The Super Six remains the pinnacle of the NWFL Premiership season, and we are confident the fans in Rivers State will create another memorable atmosphere for players, officials, partners and supporters,” she added.
She also urged participating teams to comply strictly with competition regulations and schedules ahead of the championship.
Beyond the league title, the tournament will determine Nigeria’s representative at the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place in the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Club Championship.
The competition will officially kick off on June 5 with arrival of teams, draws and pre-match meetings, while the final round of matches and trophy presentation will hold on June 14.
