Rangers, Warri Wolves Draw Valuable Lessons as Coaches Hail Pre-Season Test

Two of Nigeria’s most respected football institutions, Rangers International of Enugu and Warri Wolves, underlined the importance of pre-season preparation over results after the Flying Antelopes claimed a slim 1-0 victory in an entertaining friendly at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
The contest offered both technical crews the ideal platform to evaluate new recruits, improve tactical organisation, strengthen squad chemistry and build match fitness ahead of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
For reigning NPFL champions Rangers, who are also preparing for the rigours of the CAF Champions League, the fixture formed part of the club’s drive to sharpen tactical cohesion and integrate fresh additions into Fidelis Ilechukwu’s playing philosophy.
Speaking through Assistant Coach Odita Okechukwu after the match, Rangers Technical Adviser Fidelis Ilechukwu described the outing as a productive exercise, insisting that player assessment and tactical execution were more important than the scoreline.
“We are pleased with the response of the players. The result is positive, but our priority was to evaluate the new signings, assess their adaptability and continue building a squad capable of competing successfully in both the NPFL and the CAF Champions League.”
Warri Wolves Technical Adviser Hassan Abdallah echoed similar sentiments, describing the encounter as a crucial step in moulding a competitive squad ahead of the new season.
The experienced tactician revealed that wholesale changes in the second half were deliberate, allowing the coaching crew to assess every player while accelerating the integration of the club’s new signings with the existing core.
“The objective was to fine-tune the squad and build understanding among the players. We gave almost everyone an opportunity because these matches are about evaluation, tactical discipline and improving team chemistry. From what I saw, I am encouraged and we will continue to work on the areas that need improvement before the season begins.”
He also expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for its unwavering support of the Seasiders, appealing for continued backing as the club seeks to consolidate its return to the Nigeria Premier Football League.
Although Rangers emerged victorious, both coaches agreed that the friendly achieved its principal objective—enhancing tactical awareness, assessing squad depth and ensuring their teams are physically and mentally prepared for the demands of the forthcoming campaign.
While Rangers are focused on defending their NPFL title and making a strong impression in the CAF Champions League, Warri Wolves are determined to re-establish themselves among Nigeria’s football elite after earning promotion back to the top flight.
