Nigeria’s Falconets were handed a difficult start to their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign after losing 2-0 to former champions Spain in their opening Group F encounter in Poland on Monday.
Spain came into the contest with attacking intent and quickly took control of proceedings. Their pressure paid off in the 13th minute when Marisa Garcia broke the deadlock, firing past Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma to give the European side an early advantage.
The Falconets gradually grew into the game as the first half progressed, creating opportunities in search of an equaliser. However, Spain remained organised defensively and successfully kept Nigeria’s attacking threats under control to take a 1-0 lead into the interval.
Nigeria returned from the break with renewed determination, pushing higher up the pitch and attempting to restore parity. Despite their increased attacking efforts, the Falconets struggled to find a way through a disciplined Spanish defence, while goalkeeper Lopez made several important interventions to preserve her side’s advantage.
Spain eventually put the outcome beyond doubt in the 72nd minute. Alba Cerrato capitalised on a counter-attacking opportunity and beat Uzoma to double Spain’s lead.
The Falconets continued to battle until the final whistle, but Spain held firm to secure all three points and leave Nigeria without a reward from their opening fixture.
Coach Moses Aduku’s side will now have little time to dwell on the defeat, with China PR awaiting them in their next Group F encounter on Thursday.
The meeting is expected to be a crucial one for the Falconets, who will need a positive result to strengthen their chances of advancing to the knockout stages of the competition.
