Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, will on Monday, February 17, receive the festival torch of the 2nd Niger Delta Games at the Government House, Asaba.
The torch, a powerful symbol heralding the commencement of the regional sports fiesta, will be formally presented to the Governor during a brief ceremony expected to draw top government functionaries and members of the Games’ organising committee.
Governor Oborevwori will be joined by officials of the Delta State Sports Commission, as well as representatives of the Niger Delta Games Organising Committee.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Dunamis Icon Limited and Project Consultant to the Games, Chief Itiako Ikpokpo, is also expected to lead members of the organising team to the Government House for the symbolic handover of the torch.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission Onoriode Oborevwori said the Niger Delta Games is designed to deepen unity among states in the region while providing a veritable platform for the discovery and grooming of young sporting talents.
“The Games will further strengthen regional integration and give our youths the opportunity to showcase their abilities on a competitive stage,” he said.
The 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games is scheduled to commence on February 20, 2026, in Benin City, the Edo State capital, with the arrival of participating teams slated for February 19.
The closing ceremony is expected to hold on February 26.
The Niger Delta Games remains Nigeria’s first-ever regional sports festival, bringing together athletes from across the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
