Dikko Confirms Chelle’s Stay, Expands Role to Include Nigeria’s U-23 Team Ahead of LA 2028

Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has confirmed that Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, will remain in charge of Nigeria’s senior national team while also assuming responsibility for the country’s U-23 side under a newly negotiated contract arrangement.
Dikko disclosed this following a strategic meeting between officials of the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Abuja, where key decisions concerning the future of Nigeria’s national football teams were discussed.
According to the NSC Chairman, both parties have reached an agreement on fresh contract terms for the Franco-Malian tactician, whose current deal is scheduled to expire at the end of 2026. The new agreement includes an enhanced remuneration package as well as improved welfare provisions for members of his technical crew.
The decision comes on the heels of Nigeria’s impressive third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a performance that strengthened confidence in Chelle’s ability to steer the country’s football fortunes despite missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Dikko noted that the revised arrangement is aimed at ensuring continuity, stability and a unified football development structure across Nigeria’s national teams.
Under the new setup, Chelle will continue to lead the Super Eagles while simultaneously taking charge of the U-23 national team as preparations intensify for upcoming continental and international competitions.
The expanded role will also see Chelle and his technical team assume full control of the Olympic Eagles as Nigeria begins its quest to secure qualification for the football event of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Chelle was appointed Super Eagles head coach in January 2025 on a two-year contract with an option for extension. Since taking over the reins, he has overseen efforts to rebuild the national team and lay the foundation for sustained success on the international stage.
The latest contract agreement underscores the confidence of both the NSC and NFF in the coach’s long-term vision, while signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s football development pathway from youth to senior national team level.
