WARRI STADIUM REVAMP: SUPPORTERS CLUB APPLAUD OBOREVWORI, HAIL SPORTS COMMISSION LEADERSHIP

Members of the Delta State Sports Supporters Club have lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the ongoing transformation of the Warri City Stadium, expressing confidence that the facility will soon rank among the best in Africa.
The commendation came during an inspection visit to the stadium led by the Club’s Chairman, Chief Chuks Anyiam, who described the pace and quality of work as “remarkable and forward-looking.”
The group also paid glowing tribute to the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, for what they termed “visionary and result-driven leadership” in supervising the execution of the project. They noted that his headship has ensured strict adherence to global standards, transparency, and timely delivery.
Before the present administration, the Warri City Stadium had fallen into disrepair, with poor infrastructure rendering it unfit for top-level matches. However, upon assuming office, Governor Oborevwori prioritised the rehabilitation of key sporting facilities, including the Warri-Uvwie axis, as part of efforts to restore the state’s sporting glory.
Today, the stadium is undergoing a massive facelift, with modern upgrades already evident. The installation of a natural grass pitch alongside an extensive drainage system has effectively addressed the perennial flooding challenges that once plagued the facility.
Speaking after the tour, Chief Anyiam expressed optimism that the revamped stadium would meet international standards and attract global football engagements.
“With what we have seen, Delta State is on the verge of regaining its pride of place in sports. The quality of work here speaks volumes of the Governor’s commitment and the capable leadership of the Sports Commission under Onoriode Oborevwori,” he said.
He added that upon completion, the stadium would host high-profile matches, reducing the need for sports enthusiasts to travel long distances to watch international fixtures.
Other members of the delegation, including the Club’s Secretary, Chief Lawrence Akpoveso, and Raymond Thompson, echoed similar sentiments. They commended the Governor for consistent funding of the project and specifically highlighted the proactive supervision by the Sports Commission leadership as a key driver of progress.
According to them, the rebirth of the Warri City Stadium would not only revive football and other sporting activities in the area but also stimulate economic growth across the Warri metropolis.
The supporters’ group reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sports development in the state, noting that the ongoing transformation signals a new era for Delta sports.
