Uruguay’s preparations for their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup were thrown into disarray after the two-time champions were stranded in Mexico due to travel complications less than 24 hours before their Group H encounter against Saudi Arabia.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side had been scheduled to fly from their training base in Cancun to Miami on Sunday ahead of Monday night’s showdown at the Hard Rock Stadium. However, paperwork issues involving the aircraft delayed their departure after the plane reportedly lacked the necessary clearance to enter the United States.
The unexpected hitch forced the South Americans to remain at the Mayakoba Complex resort in Cancun, disrupting their carefully planned pre-match schedule.
The delay also meant Bielsa was unable to attend his scheduled pre-match press conference at the Hard Rock Stadium.
Despite the setback, Uruguay later confirmed that the team had eventually boarded their flight to Miami, easing concerns over their availability for the crucial fixture.
In a statement, FIFA attributed the disruption to an airline permitting error in Mexico and said it worked closely with the Uruguayan delegation and airport authorities to expedite the process and minimise the impact on the team’s travel arrangements.
Uruguay, who are seeking a third World Cup title after lifting the trophy in 1930 and 1950, face Saudi Arabia in their Group H opener before taking on Cape Verde and Spain later in the competition.
