President Bola Tinubu has approved a substantial salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay rises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent as part of efforts to improve troop welfare and strengthen national security.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the new salary structure will take effect from September 1, 2026, and will benefit about 250,000 military personnel across the country.
Under the revised package, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. Personnel from the rank of Colonel to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The review is expected to increase the Federal Government’s annual wage bill for military personnel from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing an additional ₦264 billion.
President Tinubu said the salary review was in recognition of the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces in tackling insecurity, including terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of military personnel through improved remuneration, modern equipment and advanced technology to enhance operational effectiveness.
The President stressed that security remained the foundation for national development, pledging continued support for the Armed Forces and other security agencies in the fight against threats to lives and property.
He urged military personnel to regard the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and dedication to the nation.
The new pay package is expected to boost morale among troops and strengthen ongoing military operations across Nigeria.
