Nigeria’s Super Falcons have advanced to the next round of the 2028 Olympic Games women’s football qualifiers after thrashing Comoros 5-0 in the second leg of their second-round encounter in Ikenne on Tuesday.
The emphatic victory gave the Nigerian side a commanding 7-0 aggregate win, having secured a 2-0 triumph in the first leg.
The Super Falcons dominated proceedings early, with Gift Monday coming close to breaking the deadlock in the ninth minute, but she failed to beat the Comoros goalkeeper.
Nigeria suffered a setback in the 28th minute when captain Rasheedat Ajibade was forced off following a heavy collision. Folashade Ijamilusi came on as her replacement.
The hosts eventually took the lead in the 41st minute when Uchenna Kanu capitalised on a goalkeeping error before setting up Toni Payne, who finished from close range.
Nigeria returned from the break with renewed intensity, and their attacking pressure paid off in the 58th minute as Kanu headed home Ijamilusi’s well-delivered cross to double the lead.
Payne grabbed her second goal of the match in the 63rd minute after Blessing Okpe beat two defenders and supplied a cutback into the penalty area.
Three minutes later, Kanu completed her brace with another powerful header from an Ijamilusi cross to extend Nigeria’s advantage.
The Super Falcons further consolidated their dominance in the 71st minute when Okpe was brought down inside the box, allowing Christy Ucheibe to convert the resulting penalty and complete the 5-0 rout.
The victory sends Nigeria into the next round of the qualifying campaign, where they will face Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses in what promises to be a tougher test on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
