Defending champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be under immense pressure when they take on Zambia in a crucial Group C encounter at the 14th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco on Saturday.
The nine-time African champions must bounce back from a shocking 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening match—a result that stunned the continent and left their title defence hanging in the balance.
After a goalless first half, Malawi raced into a two-goal lead before a dramatic stoppage-time exchange produced three more goals, with the Super Falcons scoring twice but ultimately falling short.
The defeat has left Nigeria with no margin for error as only a convincing victory over the Copper Queens will revive their campaign and strengthen their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
However, the task promises to be anything but easy. Zambia lead Group C after a commanding 6-0 victory over Egypt and boast one of the world’s most dangerous forwards, Barbara Banda, alongside Rachael Kundananji and Grace Chanda.
History also adds spice to the encounter. Zambia defeated Nigeria in the third-place match at the 2022 WAFCON, denying the Super Falcons a podium finish. Nigeria responded in style last year with a resounding 5-0 victory over the Copper Queens in the quarter-finals.
Despite the setback against Malawi, Super Falcons Head Coach Justine Madugu remains optimistic.
“We are focused and not deterred. Our objective remains securing the FIFA Women’s World Cup ticket and successfully defending our WAFCON title,” Madugu said.
With pride, qualification hopes and their championship credentials on the line, the Super Falcons know that anything short of victory against Zambia could place their campaign in serious jeopardy.
