ASABA — Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has charged professional accountants in Nigeria to uphold the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and transparency in financial reporting to strengthen public trust and drive economic growth.
The governor gave the charge while declaring open the second edition of the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, held at the Event Centre, GRA, Asaba.
Represented by his deputy, Monday Onyeme, Oborevwori stressed that efficiency and professionalism among chartered accountants would play a crucial role in advancing green finance through the application of practical tools in financial reporting and risk management for good governance.
He noted that his administration remains committed to sustainable development through targeted investments in renewable energy and improved waste management systems, adding that collaboration with financial experts, particularly members of ANAN, is vital to achieving these goals.
The governor described the programme’s theme, “Climate Change and Sustainability Reporting,” as timely and forward-looking, saying it directly addresses contemporary global and local challenges.
Commending ANAN for choosing Asaba as host city, Oborevwori observed that climate change is no longer theoretical, pointing to recurring flooding and shifting rainfall patterns that have heightened the vulnerability of riverine and coastal communities in the state.
He emphasized that tackling environmental and social challenges posed by climate change requires accurate data and strong collaboration among professional accountants.
The governor further disclosed that his administration is embedding sustainability through investments in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, urban renewal, climate resilience initiatives, and improved waste management systems, particularly in vulnerable communities.
In her remarks, the President of ANAN, Zuwariat Talatu Kishima, commended the Delta State Government for its support in hosting the programme successfully in Asaba. She also lauded the governor for creating an enabling environment for accountants to thrive and for demonstrating commitment to good governance.
Kishima, who earlier paid a courtesy visit to the governor, expressed confidence that the programme would contribute meaningfully to national development efforts.
