No Office, No Ticket: Okpebholo Issues Stark Warning to Edo Election Hopefuls

The Edo State Government has issued a firm directive to public servants, political appointees and government functionaries seeking elective offices to resign their positions on or before March 1, 2026, or risk outright disqualification from the forthcoming electoral process.
The warning, which applies to officers serving in any capacity within the Edo State Public Service, must be complied with before participation in party primaries or any stage of the elections.
The Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., announced the directive in a statement released in Benin on Monday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Patrick Ebojele.
According to the statement, the order was issued in strict adherence to the provisions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026, aimed at protecting aspirants from avoidable disqualification by relevant electoral authorities.
Ikhilor noted that the policy is designed to promote fairness, transparency and a level playing field for all contenders, while preserving the neutrality and integrity of public institutions.
The government further cautioned that the responsibilities of governance must not be undermined by partisan political activities, urging affected officers to take immediate steps to comply within the stipulated timeline.
The administration of Monday Okpebholo reaffirmed its commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law and strict observance of due process in governance and political participation.
All Ministries, Departments and Agencies have also been directed to give the notice the widest possible circulation.
