The 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games roars into life on Thursday, February 20, 2026, with thrilling football encounters headlining the opening day in Benin City, Edo State.
Football action will kick off at 9:30am at the Crescent Sports Club, Airport Road, one of the designated venues for the Games. As one of the marquee sports, football is expected to deliver intensity, technical quality and the fierce competitive spirit synonymous with the Niger Delta.
The opening fixture will pitch Imo State against Bayelsa State at 9:30am in what promises to be a tightly contested men’s encounter. Attention then shifts to a blockbuster clash at 12:00 noon, as Delta State take on 2025 finalists Akwa Ibom State, with both sides keen to assert early dominance in the race for medals.
In the women’s category, host pride will be on display when Edo State Women’s Team face Akwa Ibom State Women’s Team at 9:30am.
The second women’s fixture at 12:00 noon will see Bayelsa State battle Rivers State, a contest expected to showcase discipline, flair and competitive edge.
Edo State and Delta State enter the Games as defending champions in the men’s and women’s football categories respectively, adding extra spice to the opening-day fixtures.
Beyond the quest for medals, football at the Niger Delta Games continues to serve as a platform for youth development, regional unity and talent discovery. The Crescent Sports Club will provide a stage for athletes to represent their states with pride while attracting the attention of scouts and stakeholders within the football ecosystem. With preparations completed, teams are fully focused on delivering a high-standard opening day.
Meanwhile, all roads will lead to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Friday evening for what promises to be a colourful and glamorous opening ceremony. The Games, tagged Edo 2026, will run from February 20 to 27, 2026.
Organisers, Dunamis Icon Ltd, in partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission, have confirmed a rich blend of culture and entertainment.
Popular music star Patoranking, gospel sensation Eben, and crowd-favourite DJ Phyna are billed to perform.
The ceremony, scheduled to commence at 5:00pm, is expected to attract top government officials, including Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, his deputy Dennis Idahosa, alongside other dignitaries, sponsors and sports administrators. Also expected on ground is the Edo State Sports Commission led by Amadin Enabulele.
State contingents have continued to arrive at the Games Camp hosted at Benson Idahosa University, with Delta and Bayelsa States among the early arrivals.
Speaking ahead of the opening ceremony, Chairman of Dunamis Icon Ltd, Itiako Malik Ikpokpo, expressed confidence in the level of preparation.
“We have come far into the preparations, and while I am hugely satisfied and excited with what we have lined up, you can’t let down your guard at such a crucial time.”
