The Delta State Sports Commission has sent a high-powered delegation to Umunede,
In Ika North East Local Government Area, to commiserate with Super Eagles captain, Wilfred Ndidi, over the death of his father, Late Pa Sunday Ndidi.
The delegation, which arrived in Umunede on Thursday, was dispatched on the directive of the Chairman of the Sports Commission, Honourable Onoriode Joshua Oborevwori, and was led by the Chairman of the Delta State Football Association, Honourable Godwin Adode.
At the Umu Okwuehi family compound, Ile-Nobu Quarters, Umunede, the team was received by elders of the community, family members, the wife of the deceased, Mrs. Victoria Ndidi, and sympathisers who have continued to throng the family home since the incident.
Delivering the condolence message of the Sports Commission Chairman, Honourable Adode said the entire sports fraternity in Delta State and Nigeria was deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic death of Pa Ndidi, describing the loss as painful and irreparable.
He noted that Honourable Oborevwori conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to Wilfred Ndidi, his siblings, and the entire Ndidi family, praying that God grants the soul of the deceased eternal rest and gives the family the strength and courage to bear the loss.
“It is particularly painful that Pa Sunday Ndidi passed on at a time when the nation ought to be celebrating the achievements of the national team, with his son Wilfred leading the Super Eagles as captain at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.”
He added that the Delta State sports family, on behalf of the good people of the state and Nigerians at large, shares in the grief of the family and stands in solidarity with them during the trying period.
Responding on behalf of the family, Chief Jessy Azubuike and the immediate younger brother of the deceased, Mr. Anthony Ndidi, both expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, the Delta State Government, the sports community, and Nigerians across the country for the outpouring of condolences.
They particularly appreciated the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission for his concern and constant communication with the family, noting that the delegation’s visit further demonstrated the love and support extended to them in their moment of grief.
Pa Sunday Ndidi, fondly called Sege, a retired Sergeant of the Nigeria Army, reportedly died on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 after being knocked down by an unidentified vehicle while attempting to cross the ever-busy Umunede highway.
