Asaba, the Delta State capital, on Saturday transformed into a melting pot of national unity and competitive excellence as the 15th Biennial Police Games 2026 officially kicked off, drawing over 6,000 athletes from across the country to compete in 37 sporting events.
Declaring the Games open, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to deepen Nigeria’s security architecture by investing in well-equipped, motivated and future-ready security institutions. Represented at the ceremony by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, the President praised the leadership of the Nigeria Police for sustaining the Games as a platform for fitness, bonding and institutional strength.
President Tinubu described sports as a powerful tool for fostering cohesion, reinforcing stability and sharpening operational readiness within security agencies. He assured that the Federal Government would continue to back a more professional, disciplined and resilient Nigeria Police Force, while also paying tribute to officers who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.
Host Governor Sheriff Oborevwori welcomed participants and officials, pledging Delta State’s commitment to delivering a memorable and hitch-free sports fiesta. He noted that sustained collaboration among security agencies has helped keep Delta peaceful, with no reported vandalism of oil installations.
In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police and convener of the Games, Kayode Egbetokun, acknowledged President Tinubu’s support, describing it as a strong endorsement of unity, service and excellence. He drew parallels between sport and policing, listing courage under pressure, respect for rules, integrity and composure as shared core values.
IGP Egbetokun added that the Asaba Games continue a proud tradition, recalling how the 14th edition in Ibadan in 2024 reinforced the event’s role in talent discovery, institutional pride and national integration across commands and formations.
The colourful opening ceremony featured a march-past by contingents from 17 police zonal commands and the Force Headquarters, representing the 36 states and the FCT, setting an energetic tone for weeks of keen competition and camaraderie in Asaba
