Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to sports development, describing the sector as a critical tool for youth empowerment, healthy living, social cohesion and economic growth.
The governor made the commitment on Saturday during the 2026 Olympic Day Celebration in Asaba, where he was represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza.
Presenting the governor’s address, Osuoza said the Oborevwori administration would continue to prioritise investment in sports infrastructure and youth development programmes to provide more opportunities for talented athletes across the state to excel.
He noted that Olympic Day was more than an annual celebration, explaining that it served as a global call for citizens to embrace active lifestyles while promoting the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.
According to him, the state government believes sports remain a powerful instrument for development, good health and unity, adding that the administration would continue to create an enabling environment for athletes to realise their full potential through improved facilities, adequate support and sustained investment in grassroots sports.
Osuoza encouraged young athletes to remain disciplined, train diligently and compete with integrity, expressing confidence that they would continue to make Delta State and Nigeria proud on national and international stages.
In his welcome address, Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, described Olympic Day as a celebration of movement, unity and hope, urging residents of the state to embrace regular physical activity as a way of promoting healthier lifestyles.
He said the 2026 Olympic Day theme, “You Can Do This! Let’s Move,” perfectly reflects the Olympic Movement’s vision of inspiring people of all ages and abilities to stay active while fostering friendship, respect and excellence through sports.
Representatives of the Nigeria Olympic Committee also emphasised that Olympic Day remains a global celebration of the Olympic ideals, encouraging individuals and communities to use sports as a platform for promoting peace, inclusion and healthy living.
The event attracted athletes, coaches, sports administrators, students, fitness enthusiasts and government officials, who participated in the symbolic Olympic Day Walk and other recreational activities held to commemorate the worldwide celebration.
