Oborevwori Cracks Down on ‘Deve’ Levies, Warns Against Illegal Charges in Delta

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has declared that his administration will not tolerate the imposition of illegal land development levies, popularly known as “deve,” anywhere in the state.
The governor made this known on Tuesday in Warri during an inspection tour of the ongoing reconstruction work at the Warri Township Stadium.
Addressing journalists shortly after the inspection, Oborevwori stressed that the collection of such unauthorized levies remains unlawful, warning that the state government would not hesitate to enforce existing legislation against offenders.
He recalled that the law prohibiting the practice was enacted during his tenure as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, noting that the legislation remains valid and enforceable.
“The issue of illegal development levies, otherwise called ‘deve,’ is not acceptable in Delta State. This law was passed when I was Speaker, and it is still very much operational. We will not hesitate to enforce it against anyone found culpable,” the governor said.
Oborevwori, who expressed satisfaction with the pace of work at the stadium project, commended the leadership of Warri South Local Government Area for providing a conducive environment for the contractor handling the reconstruction. He noted that such collaboration is vital for the timely completion of critical infrastructure.
The governor further emphasized that the various ongoing projects across the state serve as a strategic platform for job creation, providing employment opportunities for indigenes and boosting local economic participation.
Reassuring residents of his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, Oborevwori stated that his government would continue to execute economically viable projects designed to stimulate growth and improve living standards.
“Our focus remains on projects that will add real value to the lives of our people. Beyond infrastructure, these projects are creating jobs and opening up opportunities for our youths and skilled workers across the state,” he added.
He reiterated that his administration would remain resolute in upholding the rule of law while driving sustainable development that benefits all Deltans.
