The Nigeria Falconets took a measured step toward the Poland 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Sunday, edging Senegal U20 Women 1–0 in the first leg of their Africa third-round qualifying clash in Abeokuta.
A second-half header by substitute Kindness Ifeanyi proved decisive, as the perennial World Cup finalists dominated proceedings but had just one goal to show for their superiority.
Ifeanyi made her impact count in the 51st minute, powering home a well-directed header from a corner kick delivered by defender Tumininu Adeshina, sending the home fans into celebration and tilting the tie delicately in Nigeria’s favour ahead of the return leg in Dakar.
The Falconets were forced to adjust early when leading striker Janet Akokoromowei was withdrawn in the first half due to injury. Despite the setback, Shakirat Moshood and Taiwo Afolabi orchestrated several promising attacking moves that could have widened the margin for the two-time World Cup silver medallists.
Nigeria asserted control from the opening exchanges, pressing aggressively and covering every blade of grass. Their first real threat came in the 12th minute when Moshood skipped past two defenders, only for her cross to be blocked and cleared by a resolute Senegalese backline.
Senegal responded eight minutes later through Sokhna Nogaye, who pounced on a brief defensive lapse, but goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma reacted sharply to smother the danger. The visitors’ Khady Thiandoume was booked in the 25th minute for a reckless challenge on Akokoromowei.
The Falconets continued to knock on the door. In the 30th minute, Moshood fired a point-blank effort that drew a fine save from Senegal goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye, while a slick combination between Moshood and Akokoromowei five minutes later was thwarted by a timely defensive intervention.
After the breakthrough goal, Nigeria maintained the pressure. Ifeanyi nearly doubled the lead in the 66th minute, only for Ndiaye to stretch full length to tip her effort away. A dangerous free kick from the edge of the box sailed just over the bar, Moshood was again denied from close range in the 73rd minute, and Adeshina rattled the crossbar directly from a corner three minutes later.
Despite Nigeria’s dominance, the scoreline remained tight, leaving the contest finely balanced. Both sides will renew hostilities in Dakar on Saturday, with a place in the final round of the Poland 2026 qualification series at stake.
