Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in their belief in democracy and hopeful about the nation’s future, expressing confidence that the country’s democratic journey would ultimately deliver prosperity and sustainable development for all citizens.
In his message to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, the governor congratulated Nigerians for their unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and constitutional governance despite the numerous socio-economic and political challenges confronting the nation.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Oborevwori described June 12 as a historic milestone that embodies the resilience, courage and determination of Nigerians in their long struggle for democratic rule.
He noted that the sacrifices made by the nation’s past heroes and pro-democracy activists must never be forgotten, stressing that their efforts laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms currently enjoyed by citizens.
According to the governor, Democracy Day offers an opportunity for both leaders and citizens to reflect on the nation’s progress, strengthen democratic institutions and renew their commitment to building a more united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
He maintained that democracy remains the most viable form of government because it guarantees citizens the right to participate in the governance process while promoting accountability, transparency and adherence to the rule of law.
Oborevwori urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and elected leaders at all levels, while embracing peace, tolerance and national unity as indispensable ingredients for sustainable development.
The governor also expressed optimism that ongoing reforms and the dedication of leaders across the federation would eventually translate into improved living conditions and renewed hope for the people.
“On this Democracy Day, I congratulate all Nigerians and commend their steadfast belief in democratic governance. We must remain hopeful and united as a nation. With collective effort, patriotism and commitment to national development, greater days are certainly ahead for our country,” he stated.
Reaffirming his administration’s resolve to deliver the dividends of democracy to Deltans, Oborevwori said his government would continue to implement people-oriented policies and programmes under the MORE Agenda aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing social welfare and raising the standard of living of residents across the state.
He called on citizens to remain law-abiding and supportive of government initiatives designed to promote growth, peace and sustainable development in Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.
As Nigerians mark another Democracy Day anniversary, the governor’s message echoed a familiar theme of resilience and collective responsibility, urging citizens not to lose faith in the nation’s democratic experiment but to work together towards the realisation of a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
