World record holder and reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Tobi Amusan, has arrived at Team Nigeria’s training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, as preparations gather momentum for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Amusan, one of Nigeria’s brightest medal hopes, linked up with the national contingent after another impressive season on the Diamond League circuit, where she has already secured qualification for the season-ending Diamond League Final in Brussels with four meetings still to be contested.
The 29-year-old will be aiming to make history by winning a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 100 metres hurdles, having topped the podium at the Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022 Games.
The Nigerian sprint hurdler has maintained top form this season, successfully defending her African title in Ghana and recording a season’s best of 12.28 seconds on three occasions.
She is expected to face stiff competition from a strong field that includes Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds and Kerrica Hill, South Africa’s Marione Fourie, England’s Emma Nwofor, Australia’s Michelle Jenneke, Canada’s Mariam Abdul-Rashid and Tatiana Aholou, among other leading athletes.
Team Nigeria commenced its pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen last week, with athletes using the facilities at the Aberdeen Sports Village as final preparations intensify ahead of the Games.
Meanwhile, Nigeria has suffered a setback following the withdrawal of long jump star Ese Brume due to injury. The reigning Commonwealth champion will miss the Games, ending her hopes of defending the title she won in Birmingham in 2022 with a Games record leap of 7.00 metres.
In Brume’s absence, Ruth Usoro has been drafted into the squad and will compete alongside Prestina Ochonogor in the women’s long jump as Team Nigeria seeks to sustain its impressive record in the event at the Commonwealth Games
